Stermon.com no longer runs on Windows ...
BullTlogoFinally, after some very busy months, I have definetly gone from windows to linux. I no more have any kind of device that runs windows OS. My mediacenter ... gone, my Xbox360 ... gone, my workstation ... also gone and now the server is gone to :D.

I decided to replace the Big HP Proliant 150 ML with a tiny Mac mini, I think now I will be able to sleep with out listening to the vacuum all night. It's a real kick ass machine and totally silent, It just needs to upgrades, a faster harddrive, I will wait until solid state become cheaper and 2 GB of RAM.

From today, Microsoft will no more spy on me :D

Go go go PALUDIS !!!

OpenSource: Restricted File Executer (RFE) a usefull alternative to RunAs.exe
BullTlogoOverwiev - What the application does

First of all, what is Restricted File Executer ?

Restricted File Executer is an C# application that tries to fill out a small problem in ©Windows NT based Operation Systems. That small problem is that you cannot make an administrative executable files (.exe, .msi or .bat) that a user, without administrator rights, can run, unless you also give him the password to the installation account (RunAs.exe).

In a domain based network you have the GPO, where you can place .msi files (and only this type of file). Or you can install through a .vbs (visual basic script). Sometimes this is just not enough. For example, not all the people need to update to the newest Real Player, but our Press Department does, by the way, Real Player doesn't release .msi installation packages. Or you can't just say to a user, I placed a new script in our script folder, please restart your pc so the the script can run at computer level.

Like it's not enough when you have remote users that doesn't have connection to your domain, and even if the had, a 50 Mb online installation would take a while. Whith RFE (as I will refer to this application in future) you can make a set of packages, burn it on a CD and send it to the remote user.

Another advantage is that because of the encrypted data container (.rdc) you can easily put all your licensed software on your public server, without worrying about other people having access to them (hackers, competitors, ...). Unless they have the same AES encryption key as you and an identical user account with the same username and password, the file will be useless to them.

Overwiev - Who will it be usefull for

Besides from the company where I work right now ? Well I supouse to all other System Administrators / IT Departments that run into the same problem as I did.

OpenSource: Stermon.com goes Open ... Source
BullTlogoI have finally decided that I will release all my code / software under a Open Source License.

Why is Open Source so great ? Well personally I can only tell if everybody used it, it will be a lot more easy, cheap and fast to make application. For example if I needed an special algorithm to for example compress a text. I could search for a project that had this. Include it in my project, leaving intact the Open Source License, with the reference to the author(s), and use my time to make other parts of the application.

This time maybe I use a part of another authors code, but next time maybe it's him (her) that will use a part of my code.

It's reminds me a bit of Java and C#, why make something that already exists :D

If you clic on more you can actually se how my Open Source License look a like.

SVN: Install and configuration of a Subversion Server (SVN) on a Windows 2003
BullTlogoWhat is SVN ?

Subversion is an open source system for revision control, sometimes known as svn from
the name of its command line interface. Subversion is designed specifically to be a modern
replacement for CVS and shares a number of the same key developers.
